Ukulele: How it shaped who I am today

By Devlin Ella

When I was 10, I really wanted a ukulele. I didn't know much about them, I hadn't even seen one before. But, I was inspired by a Ring Of Fire cover by Lennon and Maisy Stella on YouTube and I instantly fell in love. I got a nice little Kala (ukulele brand) from my grandma for my 11th birthday. I tried to play it as soon as I unwrapped it. I had no idea what I was doing, plus it was extremely out of tune. I took lessons for about a year to learn basics, and now if you show me the chords, I can play almost every song! But that just shows that after some practice, you can do almost anything.

Now, I've played at 3 school talent shows (won 1st place at one!), performed in front of a grocery store by my house, and at several carnivals at my elementary school. I didn't sing much before but now I sing in a youth treble choir. Music has made me who I am today. I encourage anyone that is even a little interested in any instrument, to try it. Even if it doesn’t fit with your personality or your lifestyle, there are tons to try. Guitar is very pretty, I’ve started playing it. I have found that because I played ukulele before, it’s easier for me to learn guitar. Every instrument is different, some are easier than others.
